In order to get closer to achieving stability and peace in Colombia, people’s rights need to be safeguarded. The social leaders in question are not only seeking to defend human rights, environmental integrity, and the interests of the community, they also present a political alternative to the status quo in Colombia. Ensuring that these multiple voices are emboldened, strengthened, and allowed to live is the way forward to changing the system from within, allowing the emergence of a plurality of worldviews to be reflected in politics, from the grass-roots, to achieve peaceful co-existence and harmony in Colombia.
As Citizen Diplomacy we want to do what is in our power to spread awareness amongst the international community about the dire situation in Colombia, as well as work in parallel with other organizations to protect and empower a greater number of social leaders who have received threats and can no longer safely preside in their communities.
While the international efforts are working in the right direction, they are not sufficient. By being a largely citizen-led organization we hope to bring another angle to the discussion and work collaboratively with more established organizations to magnify the impact on the ground with regards to safeguarding the rights and lives of community leaders in Colombia.
